Based on 2004 2006 combined data, the five most often reported reasons for not receiving illegal drug or alcohol use treatment among persons who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility and perceived a need for treatment included (a) not ready to stop using (37.2 percent), (b) no health coverage and could not afford cost (30.9 percent), (c) possible negative effect on job (13.3 percent), (d) not knowing where to go for treatment (12.6 percent), and (e) concern that might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (11.0 percent).
In completely rural nonmetropolitan counties, current cigarette use among persons aged 12 or older increased from 23.3 percent in 2005 to 30.1 percent in 2006, a rate similar to those observed in 2002 and 2003 (31.8 and 28.0, respectively). This pattern was largely attributable to persons aged 18 or older, whose rate of current smoking increased from 24.2 percent in 2005 to 32.2 percent in 2006, similar to the rate in 2002 (33.2 percent). Among rural teens aged 12 to 17, the percentage of current cigarette smokers in 2006 was lower than it was in 2002 (12.0 vs. 20.4 percent).
