Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Heroin sold on the street is often mixed with other substances such as sugar, starch, or quinine.
Among those aged 50 to 59, the rate of past month illegal drug use increased from 2.7 percent in 2002 to 4.6 percent in 2008. This trend may partially reflect the aging into this age group of the baby boom cohort, whose lifetime rate of illegal drug use is higher than those of older cohorts.
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (this category includes part-time college students and persons not enrolled in college) to report all three levels of drinking in 2001. Past month alcohol use was reported by 63.1 percent of full-time college students compared with 53.3 percent of their counterparts who were not currently enrolled full time. Binge and heavy use rates for college students were 42.5 and 18.2 percent, respectively, compared with 37.7 and 12.1 percent, respectively, for other persons aged 18 to 22.
According to a fairly recent report by Dr. Kim Mulvihill, Ambien addiction and abuse among teenagers is increasingly becoming a greater concern. Teens are abusing Ambien, many times in combination with alcohol, and Dr. Mulvihill notes that Ambien has been reported to have been used as a date-rape drug.
Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. The national estimate of past month use of any illegal drug other than marijuana among persons aged 12 or older was 3.7 percent for 2002.2003 combined (Table B.6). A number of States (five) that were in the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug among those aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana: Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Rhode Island.
Screening for prescription drug abuse could easily be incorporated into routine medical visits by asking direct questions about substance abuse history and current prescriptions.
