The various physical effects of methamphetamine include, increased energy, change in libido, increased sweating, decrease in appetite (anorexia), insomnia, dilated pupils, tightened jaw muscles (trismus), teeth grinding (bruxism), itching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, involuntary body movements (twitches, grimacing, lip smacking, etc), increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, vasoconstriction, dry mouth, and a difficulty in urination. Serious physical effects include, possibly fatal lung and kidney disorders, possible brain damage, lowered resistance to illnesses, liver damage, heart attack, and stroke.

In 2008, past month use of illegal drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (including binge alcohol) was lower among teens aged 12 to 17 who reported that their parents always or sometimes engaged in monitoring behaviors than among teens whose parents "seldom" or "never" engaged in such behaviors. For example, the rate of past month use of any illegal drug was 7.7 percent for teens whose parents always or sometimes helped with homework compared with 15.6 percent among teens who indicated that their parents seldom or never helped. Rates of current cigarette smoking and past month binge alcohol use were also lower among teens whose parents always or sometimes helped with homework (7.7 and 7.3 percent, respectively) than among teens whose parents did not (15.3 and 15.9 percent, respectively).

Among persons aged 12 to 20, past month alcohol use rates were 18.6 percent among blacks, 19.7 percent among Asians, 25.3 percent among Hispanics, 27.5 percent among those reporting two or more races, 31.3 percent among American Indians or Alaska Natives, and 32.3 percent among whites. Also, 75.0 percent agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that religious beliefs are a very important part of their lives, which was similar to the 76.1 percent reported in 2007, but was lower than the 78.2 percent reported in 2002. In addition, 33.8 percent agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that it is important for their friends to share their religious beliefs, which was lower than the rates in 2007 (35.1 percent) and 2002 (35.8 percent).

In 2006, 15.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 indicated that they had been approached by someone selling drugs in the past month. This was down from the 16.7 percent reported in 2002.
