The FDA reports that between 2000 and 2001, OxyContin has played a role in 464 deaths across the United States.

Most of the individuals that become alcoholics or drug addicts are good people. It is the manifestation of drug addiction and alcoholism that changes their original character and decays their former ethics and morals.

The rate of past month tobacco use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 12.4 percent in 2007 to 11.4 percent in 2008. This decrease was driven by a decline in the rate of past month cigarette use that was statistically significant (9.8 to 9.1 percent) and a decline in past month cigar use that was not statistically significant (4.2 to 3.8 percent). The rate of past month cigarette use among 12 to 17 year olds declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 to 9.1 percent in 2008. One-half million or 2.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 used smokeless tobacco in 2008 compared with 2.0 percent in 2002; this slight increase was not statistically significant.

Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 17.3 percent used alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview. This rate was higher than the rate of youth alcohol use reported in 2000 (16.4 percent). Of all teens, 10.6 percent were binge drinkers, and 2.5 percent were heavy drinkers. These are roughly the same percentages as those reported in 2000 (10.4 and 2.6 percent, respectively).

The rate of current illegal drug use in metropolitan areas was higher than the rate in nonmetropolitan areas in 2006. The rates were 8.7 percent in large metropolitan counties, 8.3 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 6.8 percent in nonmetropolitan counties as a group. Within nonmetropolitan areas, counties that were urbanized had a rate of 7.1 percent, less urbanized counties had a rate of 6.5 percent, while completely rural counties had a rate of 7.8 percent. The rates in 2005 were similar to those in 2006.

During 1997, 6.5% of federal prisoners reported using methamphetamine in the month prior to offense.
