OxyContin is a central nervous system depressant. OxyContin affects the opioid receptors found in the central nervous system that activate responses ranging from analgesia to respiratory depression to euphoria.
The percentage of teens reporting that it would be easy to obtain marijuana declined between 2002 and 2003, from 55.0 to 53.6 percent, and again between 2003 and 2004, to 52.2 percent. The percentage of teens reporting that LSD would be easy to obtain also decreased between 2002 and 2004, from 19.4 to 16.9 percent, as did the perceived availability of heroin (15.8 to 14.0 percent).
In 2006, 79.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, which declined from 81.1 percent in 2005. The prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs, marijuana, cigarettes, or binge alcohol was lower among those who reported having such exposure (9.2 percent, 6.2 percent, 9.5 percent, and 10.0 percent, respectively) than among those who reported having no such exposure (12.0 percent, 8.5 percent, 13.8 percent, and 11.5 percent, respectively).
