Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The level of alcohol use was associated with illegal drug use in 2008. Among the 17.3 million heavy drinkers aged 12 or older, 29.4 percent were current illegal drug users. Persons who were not current alcohol users were less likely to have used illegal drugs in the past month (3.3 percent) than those who reported (a) current use of alcohol but did not meet the criteria for binge or heavy use (6.1 percent), (b) binge use but did not meet the criteria for heavy use (16.4 percent), or (c) heavy use of alcohol (29.4 percent).

Persons aged 12 to 25 accounted for almost 60 percent (57.8 percent) of the total number of persons needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem. However, that group represented only 23 percent of the total population aged 12 or older. The percentage of the total accounted for by persons aged 12 to 25 at the State level ranged from 44 percent in the District of Columbia to 72 percent in New Hampshire.

In 2008, among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of substance dependence or abuse was the lowest among Asians (4.2 percent). Racial/ethnic groups with similar rates included American Indians or Alaska Natives (11.1 percent), persons reporting two or more races (9.8 percent), whites (9.0 percent), blacks (8.8 percent), and Hispanics (9.5 percent). These rates in 2008 were similar to the rates in 2002 through 2007.

Effective drug rehab treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her substance abuse problem. To be effective, treatment must address the individual's drug addiction and any of the associated medical, psychological, social, and legal problems.

Once the heroin is smuggled into America, drug dealers cut, or dilute, the heroin (1 part heroin to 9 to 99 parts dilutor) with sugars, starch, or powdered milk before selling it to addicts. Also, quinine is added to imitate the bitter taste of heroin so the addict cannot tell how much heroin is actually present. Heroin is often sold in single-dose bags of 0.1 gram (0.03 oz.), each costing between $5 and $46 (1992). One pound of diluted heroin yields approximately 4,500 doses.

In 2006, 38.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 with past year MDE received treatment for depression (saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication). Among teens with past year MDE, 23.9 percent saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional only, 2.1 percent used prescription medication only, and 12.7 percent received treatment from both sources for depression in the past year.
