In 2008, adults aged 18 or older who were on parole or a supervised release from jail during the past year had higher rates of dependence on or abuse of a substance (27.8 percent) than their counterparts who were not on parole or supervised release during the past year (8.9 percent).

In 2005, there were 30.8 million adults (14.2 percent of persons aged 18 or older) who had at least one MDE in their lifetime, and 15.8 million adults (7.3 percent of persons aged 18 or older) had at least one MDE in the past year. In 2004, there were 17.1 million adults (8.0 percent) who had at least one MDE during the past year. This represents a statistically significant decline in the rate of past year MDE between 2004 and 2005.

Among women aged 15 to 44, combined data for 2005 and 2006 indicated that the rate of past month cigarette use was lower among those who were pregnant (16.5 percent) than it was among those who were not pregnant (29.5 percent).

Heroin facts pertaining to pregnancy and heroin use include an increased their risk of serious pregnancy complications. These risks include poor fetal growth, premature rupture of the membranes (the bag of waters that holds the fetus breaks too soon), premature delivery and stillbirth.
