Over 16,000 deaths annually in the United States are due to illegal drug use. However, this estimate is conservative as substance abuse is indirectly associated with deaths from diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, tuberculosis, homicides, and other violent crimes.

Methadone addiction is a very serious problem. In blind trials, users who were given both of the drugs orally were not able to tell the difference between the effects of heroin and Methadone.

In 2006, rates of past year SPD were lowest among Asians at 7.8 percent. Rates for other racial/ethnic groups were 10.5 percent among blacks, 10.8 percent among Hispanics and among Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders, 11.4 percent among whites, 25.3 percent among persons reporting two or more races, and 25.9 percent among American Indians or Alaska Natives.

In completely rural nonmetropolitan counties, current cigarette use among persons aged 12 or older declined from 31.8 percent in 2002 and 28.0 percent in 2003 to 22.8 percent in 2004, leveling off at 23.3 percent in 2005.

As of 2008 the average age of someone trying heroin for the first time was 23.4 years.

Tolerance to LSD is not common but can and sometimes does develop after three to four daily doses.
