Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The overwhelming majority of the scientific community has consistently concluded that methamphetamine use has the potential to do great harm and should be avoided at any costs.
The smoking prevalence rate declined for white teens aged 12 to 17 from 12.2 percent in 2007 to 10.6 percent in 2008. This decrease occurred for both male and female teens: 11.7 to 10.1 percent for white boys, and 12.7 to 11.2 percent for white girls.
Drinking levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users, 61.1 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 20.6 percent of non-binge current drinkers and 17.8 percent of nondrinkers were current smokers. Smokeless tobacco and cigar use also were more prevalent among heavy drinkers than among non-binge drinkers and nondrinkers.
Drug and alcohol addiction counseling can have a beneficial effect not only on the individual and their family but also on society. When drug and alcohol abusers receive counseling, society benefits greatly reducing crime and violence as well as the spread of the AIDS.
From 2002 to 2008, rates of current use among teens aged 12 to 17 declined significantly for illegal drugs overall and for several specific drugs, including marijuana (from 8.2 to 6.7 percent), cocaine (from 0.6 to 0.4 percent), prescription-type drugs used nonmedically (from 4.0 to 2.9 percent), pain relievers (from 3.2 to 2.3 percent), stimulants (from 0.8 to 0.5 percent), and methamphetamine (from 0.3 to 0.1 percent). For illegal drug use overall, the rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, 9.9 percent in 2005, 9.8 percent in 2006, 9.5 percent in 2007, and 9.3 percent in 2008.
The percentages of teens reporting binge alcohol use and use of cigarettes and marijuana in the past month were lower among those who perceived great risk in using these substances than among those who did not perceive great risk. For example, in 2006, 6.0 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who perceived great risk from "having 5 or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week" reported binge drinking in the past month (consumption of five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage on a single occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days); by contrast, past month binge drinking was reported by 13.2 percent of teens who saw moderate, slight, or no risk from having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. Past month marijuana use was reported by 1.5 percent of teens who saw great risk in smoking marijuana once a month compared with 9.5 percent of teens who saw moderate, slight, or no risk.
