Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Experiments with animals suggest that amphetamine use during pregnancy may produce adverse behavioral effects, such as hyperexcitability, in offspring.

In 2006, there were 10.2 million persons aged 12 or older who reported driving under the influence of illegal drugs during the past year. This corresponds to 4.2 percent of the population aged 12 or older, similar to the rate in 2005 (4.3 percent), but lower than the rate in 2002 (4.7 percent). In 2006, the rate was highest among young adults aged 18 to 25 (13.0 percent).

In 2006, 9.8 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 were current illegal drug users: 6.7 percent used marijuana, 3.3 percent engaged in nonmedical use of prescription type drugs, 1.3 percent used inhalants, 0.7 percent used hallucinogens, and 0.4 percent used cocaine.

Marijuana was the illegal drug with the highest rate of past year dependence or abuse in 2008, followed by pain relievers and cocaine. Of the 7.0 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs in 2008, 4.2 million were dependent on or abused marijuana or hashish (representing 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older, and 60.1 percent of all those classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse), 1.7 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers, and 1.4 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of cocaine.

Among teens aged 12 to 17, rates of current illegal drug use varied significantly by major racial/ethnic groups in 2004. The rate was highest among American Indian or Alaska Native teens (26.0 percent). Rates were 12.2 percent for teens reporting two or more races, 11.1 percent for white teens, 10.2 percent for Hispanic teens, 9.3 percent for black teens, and 6.0 percent for Asian teens.

As a way of coping with undesired amphetamine effects, users may turn to other dependence-producing drugs.
