Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Common street names for heroin are smack, thunder, hell dust, big H, nose drops, H, ska, junk, and skag.
An individual's perception of the risks of substance use has been shown to be related to whether he or she actually uses the substance (e.g., Bachman, Johnston, & O'Malley, 1998). In 2002, the State with the lowest rate of perceived great risk of using marijuana occasionally (once a month) among persons aged 12 or older was Massachusetts. Only about 25 percent of all persons aged 12 or older in Massachusetts thought that occasional use was a great risk. This is striking in that Massachusetts reported only a moderate rate (6.3 percent) of past month use of marijuana in the 12 or older age group. States in the West and Northeast accounted for most of the lowest rates of perceptions of great risk of marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older. In addition to Massachusetts, there were Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Seven of the States having the lowest perceived risks also reported rates in the highest fifth for past month marijuana use for persons aged 12 or older. Similarly, of the 10 States indicating the highest perceived risk of occasional marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older, six had past month marijuana use rates that were in the lowest fifth (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia).
In 2005, there were 30.8 million adults (14.2 percent of persons aged 18 or older) who had at least one MDE in their lifetime, and 15.8 million adults (7.3 percent of persons aged 18 or older) had at least one MDE in the past year. In 2004, there were 17.1 million adults (8.0 percent) who had at least one MDE during the past year. This represents a statistically significant decline in the rate of past year MDE between 2004 and 2005.
A common symptom of long-term meth abuse is the chronic sensation of insects crawling on the skin; the term for this condition is known as "fornication".
Psychotherapeutics include the nonmedical use of any prescription type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, or sedatives. Over the counter substances are not included. In 2008, there were 2.5 million persons aged 12 or older who used psychotherapeutics nonmedically for the first time within the past year, which averages out to around 7,000 initiates per day. This annual estimate of the initiates of psychotherapeutics was significantly lower than the 2004 estimate (2.8 million). In 2008, the numbers of new users of specific classes of psychotherapeutics were 2.2 million for pain relievers, 1.1 million for tranquilizers, 599,000 for stimulants, and 181,000 for sedatives. There was a significant decrease in the number of past year initiates of stimulants from 2006 (845,000) to 2008 (599,000), but there were no significant changes in the estimates for the remaining psychotherapeutics between these years.
