Drug intervention is a process that helps a drug addict to recognize the extent of their problem. Individuals who are addicted to drugs or alcohol usually do not know their addiction is out of control.

Initiation of tranquilizer use has been increasing steadily since 1986. The number of initiates increased significantly from 734,000 in 1999 to 973,000 in 2000. Further, the age distribution of initiates shifted during the 1990s. In 1990, about 15 percent of initiates were teens aged 12 to 17; by the late 1990s, about one third of all initiates were teens.

According to a 2006 survey, approximately 20.4 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illegal opiate users, meaning they had used an illegal opiate during the month prior to the survey interview.

Among people who needed but did not receive illegal drug use treatment and felt they needed treatment (based on 2004 2006 combined data), the six most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) no health coverage and could not afford cost (35.1 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (31.8 percent), (c) not knowing where to go for treatment (14.7 percent), (d) concern that getting treatment might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (13.5 percent), (e) possible negative effect on job (12.8 percent), and (f) being able to handle the problem without treatment (12.4 percent).

In 2008, current cigarette smoking was more common among unemployed adults aged 18 or older than among adults who were working full time or part time (43.0 vs. 27.2 and 23.8 percent, respectively). Cigar smoking followed a similar pattern, with 9.8 percent of unemployed adults reporting past month use compared with 6.4 percent of full-time workers and 5.5 percent of part-time workers.
