Most (7.0 million persons, or 2.8 percent of the population) used psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically. The number of persons aged 12 or older initiating use of smokeless tobacco in the past year was higher in 2006 (1.3 million) than in 2005 (1.1 million) and more than 30 percent higher than in 2002 (951,000). More than three quarters (77.8 percent) of new initiates in 2006 were male, and about half (49.3 percent) were under age 18 when they first used.
