In 2005, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an alcohol use problem was 19.4 million (8.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 1.6 million (0.7 percent of the total population and 8.4 percent of the people who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem) received alcohol use treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, there were 17.8 million people who needed treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an alcohol use problem.

Among 12 to 17 year olds who had past year MDE in 2008, 37.4 percent had used illegal drugs during the same period. This was higher than the rate of 17.2 percent among teens who did not have past year MDE. Similarly, the rates of past month daily cigarette use and heavy alcohol use were higher for teens with MDE (3.6 and 3.4 percent, respectively) than for teens who did not have MDE (1.8 and 1.8 percent, respectively).

An estimated 68 percent of primary treatment admissions in 2008 for youth between the ages of 12 and 17 were for marijuana.

During the 1990s, heroin incidence rates rose to a level not reached since the 1970s. The annual number of new users ranged from 55,000 to 69,000 between 1989 and 1992. However, there were 110,000 new heroin users in 1994 and 146,000 in 2000. Between 1975 and 1977, there were approximately 120,000 to 140,000 new users of heroin per year.

Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44, an estimated 10.6 percent reported current alcohol use, 4.5 percent reported binge drinking, and 0.8 percent reported heavy drinking. These rates were significantly lower than the rates for nonpregnant women in the same age group (54.0, 24.2, and 5.5 percent, respectively). Binge drinking during the first trimester of pregnancy was reported by 10.3 percent of pregnant women aged 15 to 44. All of these estimates by pregnancy status are based on data averaged over 2007 and 2008. The 2007 2008 estimate for first trimester binge drinking is higher than in 2005 2006, when it was 4.6 percent.

In 2006, adults aged 18 or older who were on parole or a supervised release from jail during the past year had higher rates of dependence on or abuse of a substance (36.9 percent) than their counterparts who were not on parole or supervised release during the past year (9.1 percent).
