Individuals who abuse crystal methamphetamine can experience episodes of extreme anxiety, confusion, and chronic insomnia; some individuals reported being awake for several days after using high amounts of the drug.

The most recent studies that were related to chronic meth abuse have additionally revealed severe structural changes in areas of the brain that are associated with emotion and memory; this may account for many of the cognitive problems that are commonly observed in chronic meth users.

There were 6.4 million (2.6 percent) persons aged 12 or older who used prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically in the past month. Of these, 4.7 million used pain relievers, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 1.1 million used stimulants (including 512,000 using methamphetamine), and 272,000 used sedatives. Each of these estimates is similar to the corresponding estimate for 2004.

Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 17.3 percent used alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview. This rate was higher than the rate of youth alcohol use reported in 2000 (16.4 percent). Of all teens, 10.6 percent were binge drinkers, and 2.5 percent were heavy drinkers. These are roughly the same percentages as those reported in 2000 (10.4 and 2.6 percent, respectively).
