Lawrence, KansasIntroduction to Lawrence, Kansas
The city of Lawrence is located in Douglas County, Kansas, 40 miles west of Kansas City and 25 miles east of Topeka. The city is home to the University of Kansas and also to Haskell Indian Nations University, the premier Native American educational institution in the country.
The origins of Lawrence have a distinctly political component. When the Kansas Territory was opened to settlement in 1854, settlers were allowed to decide whether to admit their territory as a slave or free state. Shortly after the territory was opened, a colonization movement was started by New Englanders opposed to slavery, who quickly immigrated to the new territory, set up roots in the new town, and named it in honor of Boston's Amos A. Lawrence, a principal financier of the expedition. Efforts such as this prevented Kansas from becoming pro-slavery, a choice which in later years would lead to some bloody encounters in Lawrence involving factions from the neighboring slave state of Missouri. During the Civil War, Confederate guerrillas led by William Quantrill burned most of the houses and commercial buildings in Lawrence and killed close to 200 men they found in the city. The notorious incident came to be known as "Quantrill's Raid". A much more positive development occurred a few years later in Lawrence when the University of Kansas was founded in 1865 under a charter granted by the Kansas Legislature. Since that time, the University has had a major influence on the city of Lawrence, an influence which is still felt today. Lawrence is truly a college town.

The Jayhawks participate in the NCAA's Division I and belong to the Big 12 Conference. Jayhawk teams have won a total of nine NCAA Division I championships, including two in men's basketball, one in men's cross country, three in men's indoor track and field, and three in men's outdoor track and field. Major league professional sports are just 45 minutes away from Lawrence, in Kansas City, Missouri. Teams located there include the Kansas City Chiefs (National Football League), the Kansas City Royals (Major League Baseball), and the Kansas City Wizards (Major League Soccer).
Lawrence is a noted sports town for other reasons too. No other city in the United States can boast a more prominent role in basketball history. Although the game was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts, Lawrence is where basketball developed and grew. Dr. James Naismith, who invented the game of basketball in 1891, brought the sport to the University of Kansas seven years later when he became the school's first basketball coach. When Naismith retired in 1908, Forrest C. "Phog" Allen picked up where he left off, coaching for 39 seasons at the University, and becoming the school's winningest coach of all time and one of the nation's most successful coaches in the history of college basketball. With 13 Hall of Famers, 12 Olympians, 11 Final Four visits and two NCAA National Championship teams, it comes as no surprise that in 1996, USA Today cited the university's basketball program as the best of all time.
Other notable sports-related items about Lawrence: Basketball legend (and Hall-of-Famer) Wilt Chamberlain was a University of Kansas graduate and one of the most famous Jayhawk players of all time. Also, baseball sabermatricians will recognize Lawrence as the home of noted baseball author and analyst Bill James.

Do you live in Lawrence, Kansas and have an addiction to drugs or alcohol? Is someone you know or care about battling drug or alcohol addiction and needs help? Drug and alcohol addiction exists everywhere in society today, and when an individual is caught up in addiction it can seem that there is no way out. There is in fact a way out, and it can be found at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Lawrence.
An Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Program in Lawrence treats drug addiction and alcoholism by teaching the individual how to overcome problems in life with real solutions, and that drugs and alcohol are not the answer. This can empower the individual, and put them in a position to start winning and achieving their goals. The end result of treatment at a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Program in Lawrence would be the individual being able to work their way through life and its obstacles, without the need or desire to use drugs or alcohol.
Due to the varying needs of individuals seeking treatment, there are a number of treatment programs available in Lawrence to care for someone addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. There are Short-term Drug Rehabilitation Programs, Inpatient Addiction Recovery Centers, Long-term Addiction Recovery Centers, Outpatient Drug Rehabilitation Programs, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.
Treatment at a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehabilitation Program in Lawrence will hone in on the two main causes of addiction, physical and psychological. Over time, the individual's brain adapts to the use of a psychoactive substance, lessening the effect of the drug. Physical tolerance develops as a result. The person ends up having to take more and more drugs or alcohol to try and get back to that first initial high that got them hooked.
Upon commencing treatment, an individual will address the physical aspect of addiction by taking part in a detoxification program in Lawrence, Kansas, which will get him through the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that are caused by abrupt cessation of a substance. Withdrawal symptoms can typically last for days, weeks or months depending on the type of substance you're dealing with. Heroin withdrawal for example may take quite some time to get through, and is particularly painful. Detoxification along with psychological counseling will get the individual in the right frame of mind to start addressing the psychological issues that are involved with the addiction to drugs or alcohol. This method greatly increases the individual's chances of a successful recovery and prevents relapse.
An Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Rehab Center in Lawrence, KS. offers a sane environment that is conducive to a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The individual will be taught how to properly handle life situations and control their own behavior in response to their environment. When the individual returns home following treatment, he will do so with a new mindset on how to engage with friends, family etc. The influences which may have triggered addiction in the individual will not have the same power over him. As part of treatment the individual will have addressed these psychological stressors as a priority and they will no longer have an effect on him.
Studies have shown that an individual who is addicted to drugs and alcohol shows changes in their brain, specifically the way it functions and responds to situations. This is an important reason that professional help at a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Rehab Program in Lawrence, KS. is the best option to try and beat addiction.
Someone who is caught up in the destructive cycle of addiction is up against a lot, the odds may seem against him. But they aren't if he pursues treatment at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Center in Lawrence, KS. Treatment exists so that the addict is given the best chance at a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. There is hope for you or someone you care about. Addiction has a cure, and treatment at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Lawrence is that cure. Don't wait another minute to get the help you deserve.
