In 2008, an estimated 8.3 million adults (3.7 percent) aged 18 or older had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year. The rate was 3.9 percent among women and 3.4 percent among men. Rates of serious thoughts of suicide were highest among young adults aged 18 to 25 (6.7 percent) compared with adults aged 26 to 49 (3.9 percent) and adults aged 50 or older (2.3 percent).

Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were 1.2 million (4.8 percent) who needed treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2006. However, boys and girls had similar rates of past month use of stimulants (0.5 percent for both boys and girls), Ecstasy (0.2 percent for both), sedatives (0.1 and 0.2 percent, respectively), OxyContin? (0.1 percent for both), LSD (0.1 and less than 0.1 percent), and PCP (less than 0.1 percent for both).
