Heroin abusers often use other drugs in conjunction with heroin. They may "speedball," taking cocaine or methamphetamine with heroin, or use alcohol, marijuana, or tranquilizers to enhance the high and blunt effects of withdrawal.
In 2005, there were 28.2 million adults who received treatment for mental health problems during the past 12 months. This represents 13.0 percent of the population 18 years or older and is similar to the rate in 2004 (12.8 percent).
It is common for opiate addicts to display severe mood swings and noticeable changes in behavior and attitudes.
The Drug Abuse Warning Network* lists opiates (heroin/morphine) among the four most frequently mentioned drugs reported in drug-related death cases in 2002.
In 2007, 3.1 million teens aged 12 to 17 (12.5 percent) received treatment or counseling for problems with behavior or emotions in the specialty mental health setting (inpatient or outpatient care).
