Based on 2004 2006 combined data, among persons who needed but did not receive illegal drug or alcohol use treatment, made an effort to receive treatment, and felt a need for treatment, the four most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) no health insurance and could not afford cost (36.3 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (23.9 percent), (c) able to handle the problem without treatment (11.2 percent), and (d) no transportation/inconvenient (10.0 percent).
While in drug rehab treatment, individuals will learn about addiction, recovery and relapse while addressing misguided beliefs about self, others and their environment. Attending a drug addiction treatment program will help the recovering drug addict to make healthy lifestyle changes, manage their feelings and develop coping tools and drug refusal skills. In 2008, an estimated 20.1 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illegal drug users, meaning they had used an illegal drug during the month prior to the survey interview. The past year prevalence of MDE in 2008 was lower for those aged 50 or older (4.5 percent) compared with rates among persons aged 18 to 25 (8.7 percent) and those aged 26 to 49 (7.4 percent).
Between 1994 and 2000, the number of new stimulants users among 12 to 17 year olds was significantly larger than the number among 18 to 25 year olds. This pattern was not observed prior to 1994.
