In 2008, during their most recent treatment in the past year, 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older reported receiving treatment for alcohol use, and 947,000 persons reported receiving treatment for marijuana use. (Note that respondents could indicate that they received treatment for more than one substance during their most recent treatment.)
Many Ecstasy users use mentholated products while taking the drug for its cooling sensation while experiencing Ecstasy?s effects. This can have negative effects on the upper respiratory tract.
Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2008, boys and girls had similar rates of current use of illegal drugs (9.5 percent for boys and 9.1 percent for girls), cocaine (0.5 and 0.3 percent, respectively), hallucinogens (1.1 and 0.8 percent), and inhalants (1.1 percent for both). However, current marijuana use was more prevalent among male teens (7.3 percent) than female teens (6.0 percent). Nonmedical use of psychotherapeutic drugs among 12 to 17 year olds, on the other hand, was more prevalent among girls (3.3 percent) than boys (2.5 percent), as was nonmedical use of pain relievers (2.6 and 2.0 percent, respectively).
New Hampshire had the highest rate in the 12 or older population (59.8 percent) as well as in the 26 or older population (63.2 percent). The highest rate of past month use of alcohol for the 18 to 25 age group was in Rhode Island (76.1 percent), and North Dakota had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (25.2 percent). Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Wisconsin ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
Between 2002 and 2008, the percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 perceiving great risk declined for the following substance use patterns: using heroin once or twice a week (from 82.5 to 81.3 percent), trying LSD once or twice (from 52.6 to 50.5 percent), and using LSD once or twice a week (from 76.2 to 73.9 percent). Over the same period, however, there were no statistically significant changes in the percentages of teens aged 12 to 17 indicating great risk for trying heroin once or twice (from 58.5 to 57.7 percent), using cocaine once a month (50.5 percent in 2002 and 49.7 percent in 2008), and using cocaine once or twice a week (79.8 percent in 2002 and 79.2 percent in 2008). Moreover, percentages for all of these perceptions of risk measures remained stable between 2007 and 2008.
Marijuana was the illegal drug with the highest rate of past year dependence or abuse in 2008, followed by pain relievers and cocaine. Of the 7.0 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs in 2008, 4.2 million were dependent on or abused marijuana or hashish (representing 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older, and 60.1 percent of all those classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse), 1.7 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers, and 1.4 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of cocaine.
