Social issues of addiction focus on how heroin addicts relate to their environment, including interpersonal and family relationships, employment and legal problems.

Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2008, 90.8 percent of teens reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice; this was similar to the 91.0 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 89.1 percent reported in 2002. Most (89.7 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day, which was similar to the rates in 2007 (89.6 percent) and 2002 (89.0 percent). In 2008, 92.4 percent of teens reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, which was similar to the 92.1 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 89.5 percent reported in 2002.

In the 1970?s Ecstasy was given to psychotherapy patients. This practice was stopped in 1986 when animal studies showed that Ecstasy caused brain damage.

In 2006, 59.8 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had talked at least once in the past year with at least one of their parents about the dangers of drug, tobacco, or alcohol use, which was the same as in 2005. Among teens who reported having had such conversations with their parents, rates of past month use of illegal drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (including binge alcohol) were lower than among teens who did not talk about substance abuse. That is, past month use of illegal drugs was reported by 8.6 percent of teens who had talked with their parents about drug, tobacco, or alcohol use compared with 11.3 percent of those who had not. Past month cigarette use was lower among teens who had talked with their parents (9.4 percent) than among those who had not (11.8 percent), and past month binge drinking was lower among teens who had talked with their parents (9.3 percent) than among those who had not (11.8 percent).

With snorting cocaine, the usual ritual is to place a line of coke, about 0.3 cm wide by 2.5 cm long, on a smooth surface. The finely divided powder is then snorted (inhaled quickly) into a nostril through a plastic or glass straw or a rolled currency bill.
