From 2008 to 2009, the rate of current illegal drug use among young adults aged 18 to 25 climbed 8 percent, including a 10 percent rise in marijuana use (from 16.5% to 18.1%).

Past month illegal drug use also was associated with the level of past month alcohol use. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 who were heavy drinkers (i.e., drank five or more drinks on the same occasion [i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other] on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days), 59.9 percent also were current illegal drug users, which was higher than among nondrinkers (5.0 percent).
Most of the States in the top fifth for past month binge use of alcohol for persons aged 12 or older were in the Northern parts of the United States; four of them were the same as those for past month use of alcohol: Colorado, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. Three States were in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older): North Dakota, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. Among all persons aged 12 or older, Utah had the lowest rate of binge alcohol use (16.6 percent) in the Nation.
