New Hampshire had the highest rate in the 12 or older population (59.8 percent) as well as in the 26 or older population (63.2 percent). The highest rate of past month use of alcohol for the 18 to 25 age group was in Rhode Island (76.1 percent), and North Dakota had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (25.2 percent). Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Wisconsin ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
Increases in the perceived risk of using a substance often are associated with decreases in the rate of use of that substance. Looking over the 5-year period, the proportion of teens aged 12 to 17 who reported perceiving great risk from smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day increased from 63.1 percent in 2002 to 68.7 percent in 2006. The rate of past month cigarette smoking among teens aged 12 to 17 dropped from 13.0 to 10.4 percent during the same period.
Among persons aged 12 or older in 2001, boys were more likely than girls to receive treatment for an alcohol or illegal drug problem in the past year (1.9 vs. 0.9 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17, the percentage of boys who received treatment for an alcohol or illegal drug problem was 1.8 percent, and the percentage of girls who received treatment was 1.3 percent.
Drug addiction encompasses a widely diverse range of various drugs such as alcohol, heroin, marijuana, amphetamines, and cocaine and is commonly caused by a wide array of many different factors.
Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased from 2.7 to 4.6 percent between 2002 and 2008. For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 percent in 2002 to 6.0 percent in 2006, then dropped to 4.3 percent in 2008, not significantly different from the rate in either 2002 or 2006. Among those aged 55 to 59, current illegal drug use showed an increase from 1.9 percent in 2002 to 5.0 percent in 2008. These patterns and trends may partially reflect the aging into these age groups of members of the baby boom cohort, whose rates of illegal drug use have been higher than those of older cohorts.
The major morphine withdrawal symptoms have been reported to peak between 48 and 96 hours after the last dose of the drug and to subside after about 8 to 10 days.
