Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The Drug Abuse Warning Network* lists opiates (heroin/morphine) among the four most frequently mentioned drugs reported in drug-related death cases in 2002.
In Phoenix, Arizona the younger users of methamphetamine indicated that they choose to use the drug in pill form.
Over time, opiate users are at risk for developing infections of the heart lining and valves, skin abscesses, and congested lungs.
The percentage of the population using illegal drugs increased from 6.3 percent in 1999 and 2000 to 7.1 percent in 2001. Between 2000 and 2001, statistically significant increases were noted for the current use of marijuana (4.8 to 5.4 percent), cocaine (0.5 to 0.7 percent), pain relievers (1.2 to 1.6 percent), and tranquilizers (0.4 to 0.6 percent). A change in NHSDA questions on hallucinogens caused the estimated rate of use of this category of drugs to increase from 0.4 to 0.6 percent between 2000 and 2001.
Among full-time college students aged 18 to 22, there were increases from 2007 to 2008 in the current rate of use of hallucinogens (from 1.0 to 2.1 percent). Increases were seen for the specific hallucinogens Ecstasy (from 0.5 to 1.2 percent) and LSD (from 0.3 to 0.6 percent). There were no significant changes in the rates of current use for any drugs among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full-time college students.
In some cases, tablets sold as ecstasy do not contain any Ecstasy at all and may contain an assortment of undesirable drugs and substances, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, talcum powder, etc.
