Drug and alcohol addiction counseling can have a beneficial effect not only on the individual and their family but also on society. When drug and alcohol abusers receive counseling, society benefits greatly reducing crime and violence as well as the spread of the AIDS.

Teens who had engaged in fighting or other delinquent behaviors were more likely than other teens to have used illegal drugs. For example, past month illegal drug use was reported by 17.3 percent of teens who had gotten into serious fights at school or work in the past year compared with 7.6 percent of those who had not, and by 38.9 percent of those who had stolen or tried to steal something worth over $50 in the past year compared with 8.5 percent of those who had not.

Women are almost twice as likely as men to use methamphetamine instead of cocaine.

Among the 4.7 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 29.2 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2005. This is higher than the rate of 7.4 percent among adults not on probation in 2005.

Among 12 to 17 year olds who had past year MDE in 2007, 35.5 percent had used illegal drugs during the same period. Similarly, the rates of past month daily cigarette use and heavy alcohol use were higher for teens with MDE (4.8 and 3.8 percent, respectively) than for teens who did not have MDE (2.3 and 2.2 percent, respectively).
