The rush from freebasing is much more intense than snorting the same amount of cocaine nasally, but the effects do not last as long.

Rates of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older varied by geographic division in 2001. The lowest rate of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse was observed in the East South Central division (6.0 percent), and the highest rate was in the New England division (9.1 percent).

Many times users are unable to obtain legitimate prescriptions for Dilaudid after their prescription has run out. They then resort to what has been termed "doctor shopping". The individual with a Dilaudid addiction will see as many doctors as it takes and pretend to be in agony in order to obtain more of the drug in order to feed their addiction.

Family and friends can play critical roles in helping to motivate individuals with drug and alcohol addictions to enter treatment, fully complete the program and maintain long term sobriety. It is extremely important to note that despite the support that is given to help an effort to help an individual to maintain a state of abstinence, ultimately they may choose to use.

As in prior years, boys were more likely in 2005 to report current illegal drug use than girls (10.2 vs. 6.1 percent, respectively). Boys were about twice as likely to use marijuana as girls (8.2 vs. 4.0 percent). However, the rates of nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics were similar for both boys (2.8 percent) and girls (2.5 percent).

Current cigarette smoking among persons aged 12 or older was lowest in the West (21.0 percent) and highest in the Midwest (28.1 percent). Use of smokeless tobacco was higher in the South and Midwest (4.1 and 3.8 percent, respectively) than in the West and Northeast (2.0 and 1.9 percent, respectively). Cigar smoking, like cigarette use, was highest in the Midwest (6.7 percent).
