During World War II amphetamine was extensively used to combat fatigue and increase alertness in soldiers.
In 2005, there were 2.4 million persons who were current cocaine users, which is more than in 2004 when the number was 2.0 million. However, the change in the rate of current use of cocaine between 2005 and 2004 (1.0 and 0.8 percent, respectively) was not statistically significant.
The inhalant abuse of hexane, which is found in nitrous oxide, can cause altered perception and motor coordination, limb spasms, hearing and visions loss and in extreme cases, death from lack of oxygen to the brain.
Nonmedical users of prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs are asked questions regarding how they obtained the drugs they recently used nonmedically. In both 2005 and 2006, over half of the nonmedical users of prescription type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives said they obtained the drugs they used most recently "from a friend or relative for free." A follow up question added in 2006 asked these respondents where their friend or relative had obtained the drugs.
The rates of binge alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 were 9.8 percent in nonmetropolitan areas, 9.0 percent in small metropolitan areas, and 8.4 percent in large metropolitan areas.
