Cocaine use can result in a loss of appetite, extreme insomnia and sexual problems, heart disease, heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures, and gastrointestinal problems.

Methadone can be made available either as a ready-to-drink solution or as a concentrate, which must be mixed first with water or fruit juice. Methadone is also available as a liquid that can be administered via injection.

In the 18 to 25 age group, the rate of past month use of these drugs was highest in Rhode Island (14.1 percent); among teens, the rate was highest in North Carolina (8.1 percent) (Table A.5). Only two of the States in the top fifth for these drugs among teens and three States in the top fifth among those aged 18 to 25 also were in the top fifth among the 12 or older age group.

Binge alcohol use was least likely to be reported by Asians (10.1 percent) and most likely to be reported by American Indians/Alaska Natives (21.8 percent) and whites (21.5 percent).

If a dependent user reduces or stops use of the drug abruptly, they may experience severe symptoms of withdrawal. These symptoms, which can begin as early as a few hours after the last drug administration, include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea and vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps ("cold turkey"), kicking movements ("kicking the habit"), and other symptoms. Users also experience severe craving for the drug during withdrawal, precipitating continued abuse and/or relapse.

Situational drug abuse occurs when a drug is used to cope with the demands of a particular situation. For example, sometimes amphetamines have been used by long distance truck drivers in order to maintain alertness while driving extremely long distance. People who experience bereavement are often prescribed sedative to help them to cope with their grief.
