Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In 2005, among persons who received their last or current substance use treatment at a specialty facility in the past year, 45.3 percent reported using their "own savings or earnings" as a source of payment for their most recent specialty treatment. In addition, 31.9 percent reported using private health insurance, 27.9 percent reported using public assistance other than Medicaid, 24.3 percent reported using Medicaid, 23.4 percent reported relying on family members, and 20.8 percent reported using Medicare. (Note that persons could report more than one source of payment.)
In 2008, current cigarette smoking was more common among unemployed adults aged 18 or older than among adults who were working full time or part time (43.0 vs. 27.2 and 23.8 percent, respectively). Cigar smoking followed a similar pattern, with 9.8 percent of unemployed adults reporting past month use compared with 6.4 percent of full time workers and 5.5 percent of part time workers.
The top fifth for average annual incidence of marijuana for persons aged 12 or older was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Seven States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for past month marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Because most initiation of marijuana takes place at age 25 or earlier (Gfroerer, Wu, & Penne, 2002), the rates of initiation in the 26 or older age group were much lower than those in the 12 to 17 and 18 to 25 age groups: 0.1, 6.6, and 6.8, respectively. Vermont had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (10.4), while New Hampshire had the highest rate among persons aged 18 to 25 (11.1) (Table B.5). In the 12 or older age group, seven States from the South were ranked in the lowest fifth for incidence of marijuana.
Once a drug or alcohol addiction has developed, many individuals find themselves unable to cease using the drug of choice without enrollment into a residential addiction recovery program to receive the treatment that they both need and deserve.
Opiate users who inject the drug are at risk from infections from unsterile solutions, syringes, and needles which can cause illnesses such as liver disease, tetanus, and serum hepatitis.
Marijuana also harms when it contributes to auto crashes or other incidents that injure or kill, a problem that is especially prevalent among young people. In a study reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a moderate dose of marijuana was shown to impair driving performance.
