Lawrence, MassachusettsIntroduction to Lawrence, Massachusetts
The Massachusetts city of Lawrence is located in Essex County on the Merrimack River. Situated off of Interstate I-495 about 30 miles north of Boston, the city was named for Abbott Lawrence, a wealthy industrialist associated with the early establishment of textile mills in the area in the 1840s. Known as the "Immigrant City" owing to its high percentage of foreign-born residents, Lawrence for a while served as the residence of noted poet Robert Frost and the location where he published his first poem.
Incorporated in 1853, Lawrence quickly established itself as a prime industrial center and a world leader in the production of cotton and woolen textiles from its massive mills. In 1912 the city became the focus of international attention as the site of one of the most significant events in American labor history. The "Bread and Roses" strike occurred after factory owners responded to a new state law reducing the maximum workweek from 56 to 54 hours by speeding up production and cutting workers' pay. Most of Lawrences 30,000 textile workers walked off the job and maintained their solidarity for nine weeks in the midst of a harsh winter. Increasingly violent methods were used to suppress the protest, leading to public outcry and an ensuing Congressional investigation which eventually forced the mill owners to give in to most of the strikers demands. Lawrence today remains an urban center with a large percentage of its economy still manufacturing-based in spite of the relocation trend of manufacturing industries southward and overseas. The city's textile, apparel and shoe companies have in recent years been joined by newer companies in technology, health care and other types of manufacturing, and many of its former mill buildings have been converted into residential, commercial, and educational sites.

Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Among the 5.6 million adults aged 18 or older with both SPD and substance dependence or abuse (i.e., a substance use disorder) in 2006, half (50.8 percent) received mental health treatment or substance use treatment at a specialty facility; 8.4 percent received both treatment for mental health problems and specialty substance use treatment, 39.6 percent received only treatment for mental health problems, and 2.8 percent received only specialty substance use treatment.
The prevalence of current alcohol use in 2001 increased with increasing age for teens, from 2.6 percent at age 12 to a peak of 67.5 percent for persons 21 years old. Unlike prevalence patterns observed for cigarettes and illegal drugs, current alcohol use remained steady among older age groups. For people aged 21 to 25 and those aged 26 to 34, the rates of current alcohol use in 2001 were 64.3 and 59.9 percent, respectively. The prevalence of alcohol use was slightly lower for persons in their 40s. Past month drinking was reported by 45.6 percent of respondents aged 60 to 64, and 33.0 percent of persons 65 or older.
In 2005, probation status was associated with substance dependence or abuse. The rate of substance dependence or abuse was 37.2 percent among adults who were on probation during the past year, which is significantly higher than the rate among adults who were not on probation during the past year (8.7 percent).
Of the 2.5 million people aged 12 or older who received specialty substance use treatment in 2006, 731,000 persons received treatment for both alcohol and illegal drug use, 826,000 received treatment for alcohol use only, and 845,000 received treatment for illegal drug use only.
560,000 people used heroin last year.
Physical drug addiction takes place when the user comes to a place where they need a drug in order to be able to function normally. If the drug is not taken, unpleasant and sometimes painful withdrawal symptoms will begin to occur. The only way to avoid these uncomfortable symptoms is to take more of the drug.
