The rate of current alcohol use was 63.0 percent for full time employed adults aged 18 or older in 2008, higher than the rate for unemployed adults (55.5 percent). However, the rate of heavy use for unemployed persons was 12.8 percent, which was higher than the rate of 8.8 percent for full time employed persons. There was no significant difference in binge alcohol use rates between full time employed adults (30.3 percent) and unemployed adults (33.4 percent).
As of 2007, meth and meth lab seizure data suggests that approximately 80 percent of the methamphetamine used in the United States originates from larger methamphetamine laboratories operated by Mexican-based syndicates on both sides of the border, and that approximately 20 percent comes from small toxic labs in the United States.
Amphetamine treatment admission rates increased between 1993 and 1999 by 250 percent or more in 14 States and by 100 to 249 percent in another 10 States.
Among persons aged 12 or older who used pain relievers nonmedically in the past 12 months, 55.7 percent reported in 2006 that they got the pain relievers they most recently used from a friend or relative for free. Another 9.3 percent bought the drugs from a friend or family member. Around one fifth (19.1 percent) reported they got the drugs from just one doctor. Only 3.9 percent got the pain relievers from a drug dealer or other stranger, and only 0.1 percent reported buying the drug on the Internet.
In 2005, among teens who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year, 14.2 percent were dependent on or abused illegal drugs or alcohol in the past year, higher than the 6.3 percent who did not receive treatment or counseling.
