A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they disapprove of their peers using substances. In 2006, 89.1 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, and 82.8 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers using marijuana or hashish once a month or more. These rates were higher than those reported in 2005 (88.2 and 81.4 percent, respectively). In 2006, 81.7 percent of teens strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers trying marijuana or hashish once or twice, and 86.4 percent of teens strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. Both estimates were similar to those reported in 2005 (80.8 and 85.6 percent, respectively).
Individuals that are addicted to Lortab will often report the loss of a prescription or tell the doctor that the prescription has been stolen in an attempt to obtain more of the drug; most physicians see this as a red flag concerning addiction.
Drinking levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users, 61.1 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 20.6 percent of non-binge current drinkers and 17.8 percent of nondrinkers were current smokers. Smokeless tobacco and cigar use also were more prevalent among heavy drinkers than among non-binge drinkers and nondrinkers.
Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 with MDE during the past year who saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional for depression, 41.6 percent believed that this treatment helped "not at all" or "a little."
