In terms of individuals that have a short history of drug addiction and wish to correct the situation, but have encountered difficulty in doing so on their own, outpatient drug addiction treatment or counseling may initially be appropriate.
From 2002 to 2008, rates of current use among teens aged 12 to 17 declined significantly for illegal drugs overall and for several specific drugs, including marijuana (from 8.2 to 6.7 percent), cocaine (from 0.6 to 0.4 percent), prescription type drugs used nonmedically (from 4.0 to 2.9 percent), pain relievers (from 3.2 to 2.3 percent), stimulants (from 0.8 to 0.5 percent), and methamphetamine (from 0.3 to 0.1 percent). For illegal drug use overall, the rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, 9.9 percent in 2005, 9.8 percent in 2006, 9.5 percent in 2007, and 9.3 percent in 2008.
Among the 4.8 million adults who reported an unmet need for treatment or counseling for mental health problems and did not receive treatment in the past year, several barriers to treatment were reported. These included an inability to afford treatment (41.5 percent), believing at the time that the problem could be handled without treatment (34.0 percent), not having the time to go for treatment (17.1 percent), and not knowing where to go for services (16.0 percent).
In 2006, there were 4.4 million persons aged 12 or older who had used alcohol for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to approximately 12,000 initiates per day. The number of alcohol initiates was significantly greater than in 2002 (3.9 million) and 2003 (4.1 million), but similar to the numbers in 2004 (4.4 million) and 2005 (4.3 million).
Estimates of past month use of any illegal drug ranged from a low of 6.3 percent in Utah to a high of 12.0 percent in Alaska for all persons aged 12 or older. Utah and Alaska were significantly lower and higher, respectively, compared with the national average (8.25 percent). The States with the highest rates of any illegal drug use for all persons aged 12 or older were mostly in the West (six States) and the Northeast (three States). Colorado, New Hampshire, and Vermont were in the highest fifth for all persons aged 12 or older and for each of the age subgroups: 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older. Most of the States that had the lowest rates in the Nation for persons aged 12 or older were either from the South (five States) or the Midwest (three States). New Jersey and Utah completed the lowest fifth.
