The rate of current alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 was 16.6 percent in 2006. Youth binge and heavy drinking rates were 10.3 and 2.4 percent, respectively. These rates are essentially the same as the 2005 rates (16.5 percent, 9.9 percent, and 2.4 percent, respectively).
The rate of substance dependence or abuse for boys aged 12 or older in 2008 was nearly twice as high as the rate for girls (11.5 vs. 6.4 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17, however, the rate of substance dependence or abuse was higher among girls than boys (8.2 vs. 7.0 percent).
In 2007 2008, 42.8 percent of past year methamphetamine users aged 12 or older reported that they obtained the methamphetamine they used most recently from a friend or relative for free, lower than the 49.7 percent reported in 2006 2007. In contrast, the percentage of past year methamphetamine users who bought it from a friend or relative increased from 25.1 percent in 2006 2007 to 30.1 percent in 2007 2008. About one in five users (21.7 percent) in 2007 2008 bought the methamphetamine they used most recently from a drug dealer or other stranger, which was comparable with the rate for 2006 2007 (20.5 percent).
An estimated 68 percent of primary treatment admissions in 2008 for youth between the ages of 12 and 17 were for marijuana.
Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 with MDE during the past year who saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional for depression, 41.6 percent believed that this treatment helped "not at all" or "a little." In addition, 34.0 percent believed that this treatment was "a lot of help" or "extremely helpful."
The number and the percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem remained unchanged between 2007 (2.0 million, 7.9 percent) and 2008 (1.9 million, 7.8 percent); however, there was a significant decrease between 2002 (2.3 million, 9.1 percent) and 2008. Of the 1.9 million teens who needed treatment in 2008, 143,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (about 7.4 percent of the teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.8 million who needed treatment for a substance use problem but did not receive it at a specialty facility.
