Current employment status was associated with illegal drug use in 2005. Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older, 17.1 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.2 percent of those employed full time and 10.4 percent of those employed part time. These rates were all similar to the corresponding rates in 2004.

The percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs increased from 2000 to 2001 (1.9 to 2.5 percent). There were significant increases from 2000 to 2001 in the rates for illegal drug abuse (0.7 to 0.9 percent) as well in the rates for illegal drug dependence (1.2 to 1.6 percent). There were significant increases in the percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of marijuana and hashish (1.3 to 1.5 percent) and the percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers (0.3 to 0.4 percent).

The number and the percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem remained unchanged between 2007 (2.0 million, 7.9 percent) and 2008 (1.9 million, 7.8 percent); however, there was a significant decrease between 2002 (2.3 million, 9.1 percent) and 2008. Of the 1.9 million teens who needed treatment in 2008, 143,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (about 7.4 percent of the teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.8 million who needed treatment for a substance use problem but did not receive it at a specialty facility.

Current illegal drug use remained stable from 2005 to 2006 among teens aged 12 to 17, young adults aged 18 to 25, and adults aged 26 or older. From 2002 to 2006, however, the rate of illegal drug use among 12 to 17 year olds decreased from 11.6 to 9.8 percent.
