In 2008, 10.0 million persons aged 12 or older reported driving under the influence of illegal drugs during the past year. This corresponds to 4.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older, the same as the rate in 2007 (4.0 percent), but lower than the rate in 2002 (4.7 percent). In 2008, the rate was highest among young adults aged 18 to 25 (12.3 percent).

Methadone is an opioid that is classified with drugs such as opium and morphine. Methadone is highly addictive and the drug does have serious potential for abuse.

Ambien is considered to be a sedative, but it is also a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become cause sleep problems (insomnia).

Past month illegal drug use also was associated with the level of past month alcohol use. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2006 who were heavy drinkers (i.e., drank five or more drinks on the same occasion [i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other] on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days), 57.6 percent also were current illegal drug users, which was higher than among nondrinkers (4.8 percent).

Alabama had the lowest rate of current use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older (Table A.5). Six other Southern States were in the lowest fifth for marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older: Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia. Iowa, New Jersey, and Utah were the other States in the lowest fifth.

Two year moving average rates from 2002 2003 to 2007 2008 indicate that current cigarette use among women aged 15 to 44 decreased from 30.7 to 27.3 percent for those who were not pregnant and from 18.0 to 16.4 percent for those who were pregnant, although the latter difference was not statistically significant.
