The number of recent new users of methamphetamine taken nonmedically among persons aged 12 or older was 192,000 in 2005. Between 2002 and 2004, the number of methamphetamine initiates remained steady at around 300,000 per year, but there was a decline from 2004 (318,000 initiates) to 2005. The average age of new methamphetamine users aged 12 to 49 was 18.9 years in 2002, 20.4 years in 2003, 20.6 years in 2004, and 18.6 years in 2005.
During 2007, over 6% of college students and 9.1% of young adults that are 19-23 years old reported using inhalants at least once.
In 2008, about 10.1 million persons aged 12 to 20 (26.4 percent of this age group) reported drinking alcohol in the past month. Approximately 6.6 million (17.4 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.1 million (5.5 percent) were heavy drinkers. The rates for current and binge alcohol use are lower than they were in 2007, when they were 27.9 and 18.6 percent, respectively.
Methamphetamine use among teenagers appears to have dropped within the past several years, with the exception being high school seniors; this group has noted an increase in meth use.
In the 18 to 25 age group, the rate of past month use of these drugs was highest in Rhode Island (14.1 percent); among teens, the rate was highest in North Carolina (8.1 percent) (Table A.5). Only two of the States in the top fifth for these drugs among teens and three States in the top fifth among those aged 18 to 25 also were in the top fifth among the 12 or older age group.
Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2006, the rate of current illegal drug use among American Indians or Alaska Natives was about twice the overall rate among teens (18.7 vs. 9.8 percent, respectively). The rates were 11.8 percent among teens reporting two or more races, 10.2 percent among blacks, 10.0 percent among whites, 8.9 percent among Hispanics, and 6.7 percent among Asians.
