State estimates for past year alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older ranged from 6.0 percent in Tennessee to 10.8 percent in North Dakota. In the 12 to 17 age group, the estimated percentage of those identified as having an alcohol abuse or dependence problem ranged from 3.0 percent in the District of Columbia to 11.2 percent in Montana. Among persons aged 18 to 25, the lowest percentage was found in Utah (13.0 percent), and the highest State percentage was in North Dakota (27.1 percent) (Table B.14). Five Midwestern or Western States were in the highest fifth for the 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older age groups (Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota).

In 2006, about 10.8 million persons aged 12 to 20 (28.3 percent of this age group) reported drinking alcohol in the past month. Approximately 7.2 million (19.0 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.4 million (6.2 percent) were heavy drinkers. These figures have remained essentially the same since the 2002 survey.
Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full-time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Cigarette use in the past month in 2005 was reported by 30.6 percent of full-time college students compared with 42.7 percent of those not enrolled full time.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 17.3 percent used alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview. This rate was higher than the rate of youth alcohol use reported in 2000 (16.4 percent). Of all teens, 10.6 percent were binge drinkers, and 2.5 percent were heavy drinkers. These are roughly the same percentages as those reported in 2000 (10.4 and 2.6 percent, respectively).
Among young adults aged 18 to 25 years, the rate of past month any illegal drug use increased between 2000 and 2001, rising from 15.9 to 18.8 percent. Increases were evident for current use of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and methamphetamine.
