In 2006, an estimated 22.6 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year (9.2 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 3.2 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.8 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.6 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
There were 3.9 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) who received some kind of treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs in 2005. Of these, 1.5 million received treatment for the use of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 0.7 million received treatment for the use of illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 1.3 million received treatment for the use of alcohol but not illegal drugs.
