In 2008, heavy drinking was reported by 6.9 percent of the population aged 12 or older, or 17.3 million people. This percentage is the same as the rate of heavy drinking in 2007 (6.9 percent).

In 2008, the use of smokeless tobacco in the past month was reported by 4.3 percent of persons aged 18 or older who had not completed high school, 4.6 percent of those who completed high school but did not attend college, and 3.2 percent of those who attended some college. The prevalence among college graduates, 2.5 percent, was lower than among those who had not completed high school and those who had completed high school but had not attended college. Among college graduates aged 18 to 25, the use of smokeless tobacco increased from 2.9 percent in 2007 to 4.3 percent in 2008.

The Police Chief in Pulaski, Virginia reported in October 2000 that approximately 90 percent of all thefts, burglaries, and shoplifting incidents in the area were linked to the OxyContin trade.

In 2006, the average age at first alcohol use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 16.6 years, similar to the corresponding 2005 estimate (16.4 years). The mean age at first use among recent initiates aged 12 or older who initiated use prior to the age of 21 was 15.8 years. This is significantly higher than the 2005 estimate (15.6 years).

Nearly one fifth (18.0 percent) indicated that they got the drugs they most recently used through a prescription from one doctor. About 1 in 20 users (4.3 percent) got pain relievers from a drug dealer or other stranger, and 0.4 percent bought them on the Internet. These percentages are similar to those reported in 2006 2007.
