Interesting Facts and Statistics:

By the turn of the twentieth century, the addictive properties of cocaine had become clear, and the problem of cocaine abuse began to capture public attention in the United States.

It is encouraging to note that many teenagers recognize the risks of heroin. The NSDUH found that 87.8 percent of 12th graders agree that heroin substance abuse represents a "great risk." The fact that so many teenagers recognize the dangers of heroin use is encouraging, and could lead to further declines in teen drug use of heroin.

In 2006, 31.7 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had attended religious services 25 or more times in the past year; 77.0 percent expressed agreement with the statement that religious beliefs are a very important part of their lives; 68.3 percent agreed with the statement that religious beliefs influence how they make decisions in life; and 35.1 percent agreed with the statement that it is important for their friends to share their religious beliefs. Findings for these measures remained unchanged from 2005 to 2006. Lifetime, past year, and past month use of illegal drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (including binge alcohol) were lower among teens who agreed with these statements than among those who disagreed. For example, past month illegal drug use was reported by 7.6 percent of those who agreed that religious beliefs are a very important part of life compared with 17.1 percent of those who disagreed with that statement.

The number of persons with substance dependence or abuse was stable between 2002 and 2006 (22.0 million in 2002, 21.6 million in 2003, 22.5 million in 2004, 22.2 million in 2005, and 22.6 million in 2006). In 2006, 18.8 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with dependence on or abuse of alcohol (7.6 percent), which has remained unchanged since 2002.

Some Ecstasy users lose a sense of time and experience other changes in perception, such as an enhanced sense of touch.

Because people often leave drug rehab treatment prematurely, quality programs will make it a point to include strategies to engage and keep clients in treatment.
