Having MDE in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse. Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in 2006, 24.3 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs, while among adults without MDE only 8.1 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs. Adults with MDE were more likely than those without MDE to be dependent on or abuse illegal drugs (9.4 vs. 2.1 percent) and alcohol (19.3 vs. 7.0 percent).

Alcohol consumption levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users aged 12 or older, 58.0 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 19.2 percent of non-binge current drinkers and 16.1 percent of persons who did not drink alcohol in the past month were current smokers. Smokeless tobacco use and cigar use also were more prevalent among heavy drinkers (12.5 and 17.8 percent, respectively) than among non-binge drinkers (2.2 and 4.6 percent) and nondrinkers (2.1 and 2.0 percent).

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent (Table A.6). Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002, only five of the States with the 10 highest rates of past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the top fifth. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year cocaine use both among persons aged 12 or older and those aged 26 or older, but it was in the lowest fifth for those aged 12 to 17 and for those aged 18 to 25. Colorado was the only State that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

People who suffer from chronic pain are often in a very precarious position. Painkillers do relieve pain, and for people who suffer from constant and chronic pain, narcotics may be necessary to allow them to have any type of quality of life. The downside is becoming physically dependent and risking the possibility of developing a full blown drug addiction.

As of 1999 thirteen states had treatment admission rates for amphetamine abuse of at least 55 per 100,000, and eight of these had rates of 100 per 100,000 or more.
