Ketamine, which is also known be street names such as "K," "Special K," "cat Valium" was developed in 1963 in order to replace PCP and is currently used in human anesthesia and veterinary medicine.

Although heroin withdrawal is considered less dangerous than alcohol or barbiturate withdrawal, sudden withdrawal by heavily dependent heroin users who are in poor health is occasionally fatal.

In 2008, adults aged 21 or older who had first used alcohol at age 14 or younger were more than 5 times as likely to be classified with alcohol dependence or abuse than adults who had their first drink at age 21 or older (15.1 vs. 2.6 percent).

According to a survey conducted by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, almost 5 million people are currently taking Xanax or a similar type of benzodiazepine.

Opiate dependence is likely, especially if a person uses a lot of opiates or even uses opiates occasionally over a long period of time.

Current illegal drug use differed by employment status in 2008. Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of illegal drug use was higher for unemployed persons (19.6 percent) than for those who were employed full time (8.0 percent) or part time (10.2 percent). These rates were all similar to the corresponding rates in 2007.
