In 2001, an estimated 15.9 million Americans aged 12 or older were current illegal drug users, meaning they had used an illegal drug during the month prior to the survey interview. This estimate represents 7.1 percent of the population aged 12 years old or older.
There were 6.2 million (2.5 percent) persons aged 12 or older who used prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically in the past month. These estimates were lower than in 2007 (6.9 million or 2.8 percent).
An appreciable tolerance to cocaine high may develop, and many addicts report that they seek but fail to achieve as much pleasure as they did from their first exposure.
Having MDE in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse. Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in 2008, 20.3 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs, while among adults without MDE, 7.8 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs.
In 2007, 11.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had participated in substance use prevention programs outside of school within the past year.
