Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
As of 1996 ten states had treatment admission rates for amphetamine abuse of at least 55 per 100,000, and three of these had rates of at least 100 per 100,000.
One of the most important facts about heroin is that using this drug inevitably leads to drug addiction. Heroin addiction is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, and by neurochemical and molecular changes in the user's brain. Heroin also produces profound degrees of tolerance and physical dependence, which are also powerful motivating factors for compulsive use and abuse.
Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use in 2008 was 9.8 percent in the West, 7.6 percent in the Midwest, 8.2 percent in the Northeast, and 7.1 percent in the South.
In 2005, current cigarette smoking was more common among unemployed adults aged 18 or older than among adults who were working full time or part time (43.8 vs. 28.3 and 25.2 percent, respectively). Cigar smoking followed a similar pattern, with 10.4 percent of unemployed adults reporting past month use compared with 6.8 percent of full-time workers and 5.6 percent of part-time workers.
As in prior years, men were more likely to report current illegal drug use than women (8.7 vs. 5.5 percent) in 2001. However, rates of nonmedical psychotherapeutics use were similar for boys (2.2 percent) and girls (2.0 percent), consistent with previous findings for these drugs.
Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. A number of States (six) that fell into the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug among those aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for current use of an illegal drug other than marijuana: Alaska, District of Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington. The other States in the top fifth (Arizona, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Oklahoma) reported rates of current use of an illegal drug that were lower and rates of past month marijuana use that fell into the middle or next-to-lowest fifth.
