Interesting Facts and Statistics:

600,000 Canadians have a criminal record for simple possession of marijuana

Brand names of medications that contain, or metabolize into, amphetamine include Adderall, Dexedrine, Dextrostat, Desoxyn, ]ProCentra, and Vyvanse, as well as Benzedrine.

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17. Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

From 2005 to 2006, the rate of past month nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs increased from 2.8 to 3.2 percent among boys aged 12 or older, mirroring an increase in the nonmedical use of pain relievers (from 2.1 to 2.5 percent). The rate of current heroin use also increased among boys (from 0.1 to 0.2 percent). There were no significant changes from 2005 to 2006 in the rate of past month drug use among girls aged 12 or older.

Although the rate of drug use was higher among unemployed persons than other employment groups, most drug users were employed. Of the 13.4 million illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2001, 10.2 million (76.4 percent) were employed either full or part time.

In 2007, there were 775,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used inhalants for the first time within the past 12 months; 66.3 percent were under age 18 when they first used. There was no significant change in the number of inhalant initiates from 2006 to 2007.
