In 2005, the average age of first cigarette use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 17.3 years. This average was similar to the averages in 2002 (16.9 years), 2003 (16.9 years), and 2004 (16.7 years).
Use of illegal drugs and alcohol was more common among current cigarette smokers than among nonsmokers in 2006, as in 2002 through 2005. Among persons aged 12 or older, 20.4 percent of past month cigarette smokers reported current use of an illegal drug compared with 4.2 percent of persons who were not current cigarette smokers. Past month alcohol use was reported by 66.3 percent of current cigarette smokers compared with 45.8 percent of those who did not use cigarettes in the past month. The association also was found with binge drinking (43.6 percent of current cigarette users vs. 16.1 percent of current nonusers) and heavy drinking (16.0 vs. 3.8 percent, respectively).
Violent behavior that is reported to be attributed to drug or alcohol abuse and addiction includes 44% of murders, 21% of suicides and over 50% of the episodes of child abuse in the United States.
Ecstasy initiation remained essentially unchanged from 2006 (860,000) to 2007 (781,000), but was lower in 2007 than in 2002 (1.2 million).
In 2008, during their most recent treatment in the past year, 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older reported receiving treatment for alcohol use, and 947,000 persons reported receiving treatment for marijuana use. Accordingly, estimates on receiving treatment for the use of other drugs were 663,000 persons for cocaine, 601,000 for pain relievers, 341,000 for heroin, 336,000 for stimulants, 326,000 for tranquilizers, and 287,000 for hallucinogens. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. Also, none of these estimates changed significantly between 2002 and 2008, except that the numbers who received treatment for the use of pain relievers and tranquilizers in 2008 were higher than the numbers in 2002 (360,000 and 197,000 persons, respectively). (Note that respondents could indicate that they received treatment for more than one substance during their most recent treatment.)
