Perhaps the main reason that most people abuse drugs and alcoholic to better cope with life?s problems and with painful or unpleasant emotions. Stated differently, many individuals abuse drugs in a vain attempt to escape the pressures of life.

Among adults aged 18 or older, past year prevalence of MDE varied by race/ethnicity in 2006. The rate of MDE was lowest among Asians (3.0 percent), while rates for other groups were 14.3 percent among persons reporting two or more races, 12.1 percent among American Indians or Alaska Natives, 7.8 percent among whites, 6.3 percent among blacks, 5.8 percent among Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 5.4 percent among Hispanics.

Among the 9.8 million adults with SMI in 2008, 5.7 million (58.7 percent) used mental health services in the past year. Among all adults with SMI, 52.6 percent received a prescription medication, 40.5 percent received outpatient services, and 7.5 percent received inpatient services for a mental health problem in the past year.

In 2001, among the estimated 1.4 million adults aged 18 or older on parole or other supervised release from prison during the past year, 20.8 percent were current illegal drug users. This rate is higher than the rate for adults not on parole or supervised release (6.5 percent) and similar to the rate observed in 2000 (21.6 percent).
