Cocaine is a white crystalline powder that is often mixed with sugar, cornstarch, vitamins and flour.
In 2006, there were 2.4 million current cocaine users, the same as in 2005 (2.4 million) but more than in 2002 (2.0 million). However, the rate of current cocaine use remained stable between 2002 and 2006. The number of past month crack users was similar in 2005 and 2006 with 682,000 and 702,000, respectively.
When Coca was introduced to Europe, the alkaloid cocaine was isolated. Its medicinal effects on depression, alcohol and morphine addiction, fatigue, and as a local anesthetic were discovered. However, these discoveries were not without cost to those who experimented with it. The result was addiction and dependency on cocaine.
Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant. Physical effects of cocaine use, including crack, include constricted blood vessels and increased temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Users may also experience feelings of restlessness, irritability, and anxiety
No single substance abuse treatment program is appropriate for all individuals. Matching treatment settings and services to each individual's particular needs is critical to the individual's ultimate success in returning to productive functioning in the family, workplace, and society.
Past month illegal drug use also was associated with the level of past month alcohol use. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2008 who were heavy drinkers (i.e., consumed five or more drinks on the same occasion on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days), 68.5 percent also were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the rate among nondrinkers (4.3 percent). The rate of current illegal drug use among teens reporting heavy drinking in the past month increased from 60.1 percent in 2007 to 68.5 percent in 2008, and a similar increase in illegal drug use (from 37.9 to 42.6 percent) was seen among teens who engaged in binge drinking (i.e., consumption of five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past month).
