Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The prevalence of current alcohol use in 2001 increased with increasing age for teens, from 2.6 percent at age 12 to a peak of 67.5 percent for persons 21 years old. Unlike prevalence patterns observed for cigarettes and illegal drugs, current alcohol use remained steady among older age groups. For people aged 21 to 25 and those aged 26 to 34, the rates of current alcohol use in 2001 were 64.3 and 59.9 percent, respectively. The prevalence of alcohol use was slightly lower for persons in their 40s. Past month drinking was reported by 45.6 percent of respondents aged 60 to 64, and 33.0 percent of persons 65 or older.

Drug abuse also frequently leads to recurring legal problems. Moreover, drug abuse commonly leads to poor health and many other problems. Most importantly, drug abuse and addiction adversely affects the user's peace of mind.

Methadone can be made available either as a ready-to-drink solution or as a concentrate, which must be mixed first with water or fruit juice. Methadone is also available as a liquid that can be administered via injection.

Although there were declines in past month and binge alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 between 2004 and 2005, overall underage (persons aged 12 to 20) past month and binge drinking rates have remained essentially unchanged since 2002. In 2005, about 10.8 million persons aged 12 to 20 (28.2 percent of this age group) reported drinking alcohol in the past month. Nearly 7.2 million (18.8 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.3 million (6.0 percent) were heavy drinkers.

Amphetamine was first introduced in the 1930s as a remedy for nasal congestion.

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17 (Table B.7). Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
